All Our God
What does it mean to “Love the LORD your God with all your heart & with all your soul & with all your strength?
Why list each individually: heart, soul and strength; what’s the difference?
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”- Deuteronomy 6:4-5
The three-fold emphasis takes a statement to the ultimate extreme.
Also, heart = seat of emotions (poetically) meaning emotional love.
Soul = the essence of a person, that is to say a conscious decision to love (not emotional love but a personal decision to prioritise the other person’s feelings).
Strength = physical abilities.
So a person is to dedicate their conscious, emotional and physical energies into loving God so that there is no room in their life for anything to take priority over God.
That clearly doesn’t mean they can’t love other things but the christian and jew are not permitted to love anything more than God.
