Help! Is There A Simple, Bare Bones Method Of Measuring Current Without Using Store Purchased Multimeters?

The title is pretty straight forward. I’m hoping there is a MacGyver’s way (doesn’t involve sophisticated circuit creation) for measuring a (small) current . A poor man’s analog volt/ammeter is what I’m after. Any ideas? Links?

Yes, I suppose a coil pulling a piece of metal to it would work (also known as a “moving iron ammeter”). Measure the force produced with a balance or a spring. (first link)

Very small currents could be measured with a “tangent galvanometer” made from a compass and a loop of wire. (second link).

A good thought exercise but…. meters are really, really cheap. Why not just break down and buy one?
