how much does it usually cost to repair a bari sax?
my school has this really old bari sax. honestly it’s not in that bad condition, but it is missing one of the brackets (or whatever they’re called) that hold the keys on, and it’s very badly dented where the two pieces join together at the bottom of the instrument. I want to buy it from my teacher and get it repaired so it is playable, but i have no idea what it would cost to do so (get it repaired, that is)
Hi, Eli. The piece you call a bracket is called a post. Some techs can build new posts and solder them to the body, but a severe dent in the bow (the U-shaped piece that connects the body to the bell) can be highly problematic, especially if the tone hole for the low C (always located on the bow) is dented, out of round, or does not have a level surface (toneholes may be leveled, but only in instances of minor warping- and it’s preferable to do as little filing of toneholes as possible).
Your teacher’s hands are likely tied even if he wanted to sell it to you. It is the property of the school; if it is a public school the instrument likely belongs to the local school board and is assigned to the school. Even if he could make it happen somehow, I’m not sure I’d fool around with a horn with a crashed bow unless I could find another horn of the same make and model with a different problem (hopefully one in good shape missing a neck- if you have the replacement neck there are good deals to be had on horns lacking a neck. If I had a line on a replacement neck I could have had an awesome deal on a Buescher “Big B” for a backup to my 11M…) to make a Frankenhorn out of them (parts from each horn). Either way, if you venture into this, I’ll take a guess you’d be spending at least $500 to get it right (and possibly more). Take pictures of the horn’s noticeable damage and show them to a tech or two to see if they think the horn is worth putting into playable condition.
