Baritone Saxophone
New Baritone Saxophone for Upper-Intermediate?
I have been playing the bari sax for awhile now. (four to five years, if memory serves) I play in a concert band, a big band, and a jazz combo. I’m also beginning to use my sax for my rock band.
I’d like to know which horn would be most suitable for my situation. I have a decent amount of experience, and want to continue playing the bari throughout college.
Right now, I am looking at the Juipter 89SG Artist Series or the Yamaha YBS-52. My price range is around 5-3,000 depending on how much I can get for my other horns.
If ou are planning on college, don’t go for an intermediate level and just go for the professional level horns. They are more expensive, but why spend the money on a horn that you may have to upgrade again in a few years?
As to what brand, I would recommend whichever one you like the sound you get (in other words, don’t buy online). Go to as many music stores as you can, and play as many baritone saxophones as you can. Unfortunately, most stores don’t have a large inventory of baris to play on so this is much harder than alto or tenor. Once you have done that, buy the one that gets the tone and playability you like.
