Book Cello Bass
How difficult is Cello? Can I learn it on my own?
I currently play guitar, piano, harmonica, some drums, and I tend to pick up instruments quickly.
I play by ear (relative pitch, not absolute), and I can tell very easily if a note is wrong/out of tune, ect.
I understand that bowed instruments, having no frets, are extremely hard to master fingering, not to mention the bowing technique.
I am currently a full time student w/ a part time job, that is to say, I have little extra time and extra money. As such, I do not have time for lessons, nor the surplus cash to fund them.
What little time I do have I devote to my music and arts, and I love the beautiful dulcet tones of a good cello. I love the violin as well, and the bass, but I don’t have enough space for a bass and I’m afraid the violin’s fingerings will be much more difficult.
I ask bowed instrument players this question: can I learn cello on my own (most likely w/ books) without live instruction?
The cello is very different from those other instruments. While you can try learning from a book, I really would recommend getting a teacher to start with. It doesn’t need to be an amazing teacher that charges $50 an hour… but just get some sort of teacher.
Search around. You may be able to someone who will teach for the enjoyment of it, or at least, for a very low price. I did that for a while.
Once you learn the basics, if you wanted to end lessons and learn by yourself, I think it would be pretty easy.
If you want to go past the intermediate level though, I would once again recommend getting a good teacher- that’s where it’ll get expensive.
