You got it. Tannerite is ammonium nitrate and aluminum dust, a high explosive compound. A simple combination of an oxidizer and a fuel, just like potassium chlorate and vaseline. It will not go off with out a shockwave. The shockwave of a high powered rifle bullet imparts enough energy to break the bonds of the ammonium causing a domino effect and thus, big boom. A blasting caps acts in the same fashion. It has three components; a metal casing, a primary explosive (booster) and a secondary explosive. The primary explosive is usually something extremely sensitive (Hg(CNO)2 or TNP) and the booster is a small amount of the explosive your trying to set off. The primary is set off and since it is in a metal casing forces all of its energy to the secondary. This causes extreme compression, heat, and eventually after a few miliseconds, detonation of the high explosive.
