Early 20th century American sheet music question help please?
Can anyone tell me what the significance of the small number 5 or 6 enclosed in a circle on the title page is please?
The first responder is close to it. But it’s more than just the highest to lowest note. I’d have to look at it to be sure, but it’s probably a sight-reading aid.
If one is good at sight-reading all that’s needed is the tonic tone or the pitch that the key is in. Then, 5 would be 5 notes up from that. Vocal site-readers, once they lock onto that tonic pitch (the main note of the key) can then sing the notes without reading the music, if desired.
It could also refer to a chord in a chordal progression. You’d have to either list a link or cut and paste the music into a .gif or list the order of all the numbers for me to tell you if it’s a cord progression which I don’t think it is.
