Guitar Tabs – What does this symbol mean?

I was browsing the net and found several tabs which I would like to print off, however they all had a “x” symbol on the tab. I don’t know what it means but would be grateful if anybody out there knows what it means and how to play it.
Here is an extract containing it:

e|——————————————–|
B|——————————————–|
G|–13-13-13-13-13-13–12-12-12-12-12-12-12-12|
D|—x–x–x–x–x–x—x–x–x–x–x–x–x–x|
A|–11-11-11-11-11-11–10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10|
E|——————————————–|

Ok, it didn’t come out very well, but you get the idea!
Also how do I “palm mute” when playing chords on the guitar?
Thanks

Use the heel of your palm for damping but this is an unusual TAB section. Its a double stop lead line or synchopation riff by the looks of it. The only way you can damp a string between two other strings is to use a pick and finger tip (plucking) action, sort of a pinch technique, because there is no way to damp the middle string and strum a 2 note diad at the same time. You could try to damp the middle string with the fleshy part of your first finger (frethand). Which is what Im guessing the tabber hand in mind.
