How did classical piano music evolve into modern piano music?
I’m supposed to write a paragraph to read in front of the class about how classical piano music evolved into modern piano music? Could you give me some info to help me write the paragraph? Thank you! 
Be cautious and do think carefully about proper definitions vs.the non-exact commercial usages of the words ‘classic’ (not classical) ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary.’
Classical, as a general term for music, is a specific sort of musical dialogue which spans many different periods, styles and stylistic aspects – from medieval music to renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, modern and our contemporary eras. “Modern,” in this usage, is specifically from 1890 to 1960. “Contemporary,” is from 1960 to the present. None of it refers in any way to popular music of any genre.
If you’ve already detected a big difference in how the word is used for use in your assigned task, that is proof of another usage of the word ‘modern,’ or just plain sloppiness on the part of the course being taught.
A quick click into YouTube and a search request for modern or contemporary piano music brings you to clips of ‘New-age,’ Rockabilly, and all sorts of other genres of piano music other than “Modern or Contemporary Classical.” These other genres include the wildly popular pianist Yiruma, George Winston, and the like. (Many a piano student who has studied less than five years has noodled around with the basic materials and configurations generally found in these more popular genres.)
Ask any classical musician for modern or contemporary piano music and it would not occur to them you are asking about a popular genre.
Modern classical piano music would include pieces by Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Shostakovitch,Prokofiev, Messiaen, Poulenc, etc. Contemporary classical is from classical composers written after 1960.
The ‘evolve’ part of your question? Simple. The same development of harmonic advances in vocabulary and form as the rest of classical music.
