Being eco-friendly during the holidays simply requires looking at alternatives to wasteful traditions. Greeting cards and wrapping paper account for much of the waste generated each holiday season. Over-packaging is another major source of garbage. Luckily, there are several viable options that can significantly reduce your footprint.
Wrapping paper, ribbons, Christmas trees, and even gifts can all be rethought to be more environmentally friendly in today’s global economy. Instead of using a discount store and buying mass-produced products that look identical to everyone else’s, you can shop for truly unique gifts, wrappings, decorations, holiday photo cards, and other holiday elements that will look better, last longer, and create a healthier world for future generations.
Rethink Wrapping Paper
Instead of spending money on wrapping paper that is thrown away, there are countless ways of wrapping a gift without generating trash.
Old maps, sheet music, or colorful ads from old magazines add a touch of Old World whimsy to a gift. Sunday comics and foreign newspaper pages provide visual appeal without creating refuse. One way to avoid packaging altogether is to buy your gifts from yard sales and thrift stores. Families can also use recycled Christmas cards instead of those made with new paper. Instead of buying a cut Christmas tree, potted trees can be planted in the yard or at a local school or park, providing oxygen and habitat.
