Discovery Jazz
Why is Metal not as recognized as other genres?

I was scrolling through Billboard.com’s charts and found to my dismay a glaring omission of “Heavy Metal” and any subsequent genre. Unfortunately, upon later discovery, it came to light that not only does Billboard.com consider “Hard Rock” to be the same as Metal, but it considers Three Doors Down, Incubus, and Nickelback to be in either the former or the latter. The same problem can be found with the genres found on Youtube, despite the fact that the two sites feature genres such as “Jazz”, “Reggae”, “International”, and “Gospel”. With it’s quicker pace, more complex style of instrumentals and deeper subject matter it’s the kind of music the 21st century needs so why is Metal considered inferior to these genres or, at worse, not a genre at all?

I think there is certain amount of disdain for metal as it tends to look rather silly and uncivilized if you’re not into it and I think lot of people, especially music nerds, tend to dismiss it as childish, something you like when you’re 15, but nothing an adult would listen. It has this airhead image that’s kind of baggage from the eighties I guess. So mainstream places like Billboard or Youtube don’t consider it to be important enough, (or just plain forget the whole genre because the guy who first made the genre list for winamp or some software left it out and everyone else just copied the list.)

And you have to admit, metal can be a bit over the top and make an easy target for ridicule and belittlement. Not that it makes it any worse musically, but it affects how it’s perceived. As a lifelong metalhead I agree with everything you say about how it is often more complex and has (with certain bands at least) deeper subject matter but you have to be into metal to see that. To see beyond the stereotype. Take an honest look on bands like Manowar or Immortal. That’s what metal is to the world. You kind of have to be a metalhead to think they’re cool. To others they’re not just kinda silly, they border on ridiculous. (And I love them both. :) )

Bottom line: I don’t think it really matters. If billboard.com or whatever thinks themselves too high and mighty to consider it a genre, it’s their loss and it doesn’t affect the music. People who like metal, love it to death. Some people “grow out of it” but you know half of them have Master of Puppets on their mp3-player, even though they would never admit it.
