Dorsey Sheet Music
Herbie Mann’s “Oodles of Noodles?”?

Hello! I’m an aspiring contemporary/jazz flautist looking for some new material to play for an upcoming audition. Recently, I had listened to “Oodles of Noodles” (James “Jimmy” Dorsey) from Herbie Mann’s Jazz Masters 56 album. I immediately fell in love with the piece, but I can’t seem to find any flute sheet music for it. In hopes of finding something, I’ve been looking through my Real Books. Would anyone happen to know where I could find or download sheet music for this tune? (For flute?)

An engine search for sheet music of this tune reveals that the sheet music is long out of print (see a couple of links below).
I just listened to this piece on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcRedZC1EP0. It’s in Ab major with a bridge in C minor, and really does not seem all that difficult (but you will need a flute with a low B foot since that note is used several times within the melody- it almost sounded like an alto flute at times). Why not transcribe it yourself? If you have a friend or teacher with good ears help you map out the chord changes (a great first step to help you determine note selection) if needed, a software called Best Practice could help you do it. An open source software (free download at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/BestPractice.htm ), Best Practice can open MP3 files or tracks off a CD and change tempo without changing key, change key without changing tempo (great if you work with singers who like doing tunes in different keys), and even create loops to help you hear that really tricky passage over and over again. The greatest reward I find in transcribing is that every time I do it, I get a little better at it- and more and more things that once seemed impossible now seem playable. Try transcribing- the original analog downloading technique. Feel free to email my profile if you need further tips to get started.

Although gospel music has been a taproot for soul, jazz, and rock-and-roll, it remains a fairly insulated art, with its own venues, audience, and mythology. A good place to start investigating this revelatory music is Michael Harris’s The Rise of the Gospel Blues: The Music of Thomas Andrew Dorsey in the Urban Church. Dorsey (1899-1993), the inventor of modern gospel, began playing the piano …
