Audio Books – Why Would I Buy One?
Firstly, it’s illegal to read and to drive – you just can’t do that! People are texting and twittering when they’re driving and we all know you shouldn’t do that, says Adria Firestone, performance coach, teacher, singer and writer.
Let’s just take transportation first of all. The possibility of being in a car, being on a train, being in a plane, being anywhere where you’re going from point A to point B, think about the pleasure of being able to shut out the world, create your own cocoon, stick in your ear plugs, and walk into a magical world. An audio book is like walking into another world.
Now, let’s say you want to learn another language, let’s say you want to read a fabulous mystery novel, and you don’t have any time, because you’re spending half of your time on the freeway in California. So, the perfect way is an audio book.
It’s extremely safe. You’re not going to hit the guy in front of you, nor are you going to experience road rage, because you’re being entertained. You’re sitting back in your car and enjoying being surrounded by a quality actor reading a quality book, something that’s going to take you on a journey, and yet still you have the full use of your hands and eyes. You can be safe, you can be relaxed. It’s like taking your arm chair and blanket with you. Especially on the subway in the morning in Manhattan, you want to be left alone! You’re crowded in like sardines, and yet these little ear phones can take you from Peru to Paris on a fabulous journey.
It’s high level entertainment, a bit like a radio play, and the best part is you get to hear fabulous actors, who are going to take you into their interpretation of the book with character distinctions, accents with inflections, with adding suspense, with dynamics – loud and soft, with excitement, and with pacing – fast or slow. You can live the drama!
This world of audio books is expanding so incredibly with fabulous people performing titles. Every day more people are coming into the business and more and more people are realising that this is not, let me just pick up a book and read it, this is theatre! They are called voice actors for a reason. It is a tremendous skill and a tremendous amount of training goes into voice acting. So that’s why these wonderful actors are able to take you on these journeys.
It’s uninterrupted special time, your time, a gift to yourself.
For some of us, there was a time when you were a little kid and maybe you weren’t feeling well.. and your grandfather would come and tuck you into bed and read you a story, and everything was better, everything felt fine. You could close your eyes and slip into the dreamland of this magical world created for you. That’s what an audio book and a voice actor can do.
It’s intimate and it’s personal – how amazing to hear in some cases an author telling their own story. And what a wonderful way to learn things. You can have a library of knowledge. You can listen to philosophy, you can learn Chinese, there’s so much in our world that is open to us, this is something we really need to enjoy. Take advantage of it. Experience an audio book and I don’t think you’ll ever be the same.
