On Understanding Autism by Parting Fact from Fiction

When people converse autism, there are a lot of preconceived notions about what it really is. Learning about the myths surrounding this disorder is important because these myths stop people from looking undoubtedly; and thus, missing opportunities to help other people or their own family members that might have autism. Below are a few things to guard for about the wrong ideas people have of autism:

  • Fallacy #1 – Autism enables a child to develop an extremely advanced understanding of intricate guide, mathematics, or even music. While it’s true that there are a few autistic people who display exceptional gifts in some areas of intelligence, majority has normal or below average skill sets. Most people who have autism and are all at once are savants focus greatly on one skill group, which is the reason for the development of that skill.
  • Some people think that all people with autism are not able to become useful in life. As a matter of fact, autistic children have the potential to become self-sufficient, if only they will be given the opportunity to learn how; this is where early intervention is very worthy. Humanistic therapy can help autistic children achieve their factual promise and become independent adults, fully capable of taking care of themselves. Sandtray is a dynamic type of psychotherapy that lets clients express their innermost emotions by means of metaphor and symbol.
  • Autistic children are not entirely uncapable to feel emotions and form relationships or emotional ties and bonds with other people. Autistic children may even be able to form a deep and strong emotional connection with the people who raise them, even if this circle of individuals may be smaller than what other children may be capable of. Their inability for social communication impedes them to effectively relate to other groups of people, especially those in their age group. It’s a fact that autistic individuals can actually develop relationships even if with smaller groups of individuals; they are able to form friendships, get married, and maintain happy relationships.
  • It’s also not true that all autistic individuals are like clones that experience the same symptoms of the disorder. Not different how people have the misconception that children with Down’s Syndrome are the same the world over, a lot of people also believe that people who have autism are something like clones that have the same issues. Autistics are individuals and symptoms will vary from single person to another.
  • Autism is a social disorder that is predominantly described by a person’s inability to communicate with and adapt to his or her environment in a way that other people can. Play therapy is an effective means of helping an autistic child, although they go through a different kind of play therapy, one that promotes social communication and discourages self-absorption. Autistic children don’t approach play like other children do; more often than not, they encounter difficulties with activities that need the employment of imagination, non-linear thinking, creative thinking, and the likes. Different games that encourage interaction between the child and toys, and eventually between the child and other people will be helpful in helping autistic children understand how social interaction works. With tolerance and expressed effort, parents can exercise play therapy to help their child develop into a highly functioning adult.

It’s also very important to remember that parents and guardians play a focal role in the development of the autistic child’s social communication skills; therapists will usually encourage parents or guardians to take part on their therapy sessions.
