Guitar Recorded Version
In the STUDIO version of David Cook’s “Always Be My Baby”, what are the 2 chords the guitar is playing?
David Cook is from this season of American Idol, and his Studio Recording of “Always Be My Baby” is found on iTunes. I would like to play this version of the song (not the Mariah Carey melody) but I don’t know the chords that are playing in the song (there seems to be only 2 of them). If anyone knows the the chords and can tell me it would be appreciated. Thanks! (I wish David Cook had an account here and could tell me himself XD)
From all that I am listening to on the iTunes preview, just the chorus, he does this:
F# for 4 beats, Bsus for 4, D#min7 for 4, Bsus for 2, C#sus for 2, then starts over.
Compare with Mariah’s original, transposed so the chords fit where he started:
F# for 3, F#/F for 1, D#min for 3, D#/C# for 1, B for 3, B/A# for 1, G#min for 2, C# for 2, and then starts over.
The only reason Mariah’s looks longer is because on the 4th beat of mostly every chord, the progression is laid out nice enough that you can “drop” down the bass note to one note below. This is very common in pop songs. That’s what I mean by, for example, F# for 3, then F#/F for 1. Basically, you have an F# chord for the 4 beats, but on the 4th beat play an F natural in the bass note. That’s the notation for F#/F –> Before the slash is the actual chord, then after the slash is the bass note.
Frankly, I would experiment and find parts that you like in both. Mariah does that progression the entire song. I think it would be cool to do hers for the verses, and then Cook’s for the chorus, wow that would be amazing! But just play around and see what you think, and have fun 
Ok so I broke down and bought it from iTunes cause I love it too and I guessed right: he does Mariah’s progression stuff for the verses, and then his own version for the chorus. It really is a cool idea.
And I have no idea how the bridge goes…. that will take longer to figure out but at least here’s a place to start!
