Hemke Alto

Which oboe reed hardness?

I’ve been playing Alto Saxophone for 6 years on a Hemke reed (3) and am switching to oboe. What reed hardness should I use for oboe medium or medium hard?

I’d personally advise starting on a medium-soft reed–oboe reeds are tricky things. Additionally, the embouchures of the alto sax and oboe are extremely different. I’ve been playing the oboe for about three months and I’m still using a medium-soft. Starting on a medium or medium-hard reed would probably be pretty discouraging because the hardness of the reed determines how easy it is to play (softer=easier and harder=…harder).
