are there any advantages to using a mellophone mouthpiece instead of a french horn mouthpiece with adapter?
Yes, Mellophones already have tuning problems, always have. The leadpipe on the mello is designed for the alto mouthpiece so 2 things happen when you use a horn mouthpiece. 1.) the bore of the horn mp is off for the mello and causes worse intonation problems and “wolf” (missed) notes. 2.) the adapter has a drop off at the rim inside the leadpipe and that also causes bobbled notes.
The mellophone (alto) mouthpiece also has a wider rim and may be more comfortable in a marching situation.
