Java Tenor

Good setup for a Link metal mouthpiece?
I got a Link Super Tone Master mouthpiece (7*) for my tenor sax a while ago, but I’ve been having trouble getting a decent sound out of it. What’s a suitable type/size of reed to get good tone with it? I’ve been trying (Vandoren) Java reeds, size 3, for a while, but my tone is way too airy and buzzy.
NOTE: I also use a C* with Vandoren 3s and I can get a great sound with it, so I’m assuming that the problem isn’t entirely with my technique. My embouchure with the metal mouthpiece could easily be messed up, but I don’t want to try changing it unless I know I’m using reeds that are capable of making a good sound.
First thing I would do is drop down at least a 1/2 size in reeds.
The 7* Link tip opening is quite a bit larger than your C*
The Link is like .105 and your C* is probably .70. Also using Vandoren’s they are harder than Ricos
So, maybe try like a Rico Royal 2.5 or Rico Jazz Select 2M or 2H.. and then build your way back up until your chops strengthen and adjust to the wider opening. That is quite a jump, and if you are using reeds that are too hard, I would be afraid you will develop other bad habits of clenching and being too tight , which is going to start messing with your pitch.
Then just work those long tones.
Don’t get hung up on the higher # reed you use, the better player you are.. that’s crap. There is nothing wrong with using softer reeds.
However, that 105 is by no means a huge tip opening.. its average.. but compared to the C* .. its a big jump, so you are going to have to drop down a little in reed strength.
