Jazz Classics
Who are the best contemporary jazz groups/artists ?

I’m looking for contemporary jazz. I already know the classics well and am looking for new innovative and fresh music.
YES! Teaim your description is exactly what I am looking for.

These are albums that I listen to often. I can confidently say that for what they are, they are high quality accomplishments. I’m pretty sure that the artists, and they are artists, accomplished what they were trying to do.
I can’t know if its the kind of music that you will enjoy. If it is, you are in luck.

Scott Colley- Archietect of the Silent Moment.

Kurt Rosenwinkel- Deep Song, the Next Step (or any of his albums).

Ari Hoenig- Inversations.

John Ellis- Roots Leaves and Branches.

Chris Potter 10- Song For Anyone.

Dafnis Prieto- The Absolute Quintet

Human Feel- Galore

Reid Anderson- The Vastness of Space

Mat Maneri Quartet- Blue Decco

Jerome Harris- Hidden In Plain View

Dave Douglas- Moonshine

Jay Hoggard- In the Spirit

The Jazz Passengers- Implement Yourself

Don Byron- Ivey Divey

Brian Blade Fellowship- Season of Change

Mike Maineri- An American Diary

James Newton- The African Flower (not too contemorary. From the mid 1980′s, but a must hear).

All of this list is music of a more adventurous nature. Its not a newer version of traditional style playing. This music is in the tradition of the pioneers of the mid 1960′s musicians. It doesn’t sound like the revolutionary jazz of that time (in most cases), it is similar in that its explorative and not typical of the times. That’s my impression anyway.

I don’t care about best answer, instead, I hope that you get around to trying the music on this list.

Jazz Classics: Dizzy Gillespie – A Night In Tunisia
