Jazz Piano Chords How To Remember Them

Great jazz pianists are a rare breed. Really excellent artists are hard to find because there are so many musicians who are casual music performers and there are only a few who are well trained and competent. Good instruction, technique and remembering jazz piano chords are what make a jazz musician a cut above the rest.

If you are thinking of taking your fondness for this style of music to the next level then you have to remember a couple of basic principles. One is that the jazz pianist must know the ii-V-I chord. The other principle you should remember is that there are just two notes for each chord a jazz pianist must always play. These are the 3rd and 7th notes in a chord.

You can practice this right now if you like. Get a play-along music CD player and a black piece of sheet music. Divide the lines of the sheet music into four parts. Write the ii-V-I chord over the measure, and then write the II chord above the 1st measure. The V chords should be above the last 2 measures.

Write the third and seventh of the chord in each measure. Remember to keep the note in the same place when you move one chord to the next one when there is a repeat note. Then play the notes you just wrote on the music sheet on your keyboards. Keep the notes you play an octave over or below middle C. Remember which finger you used to play the notes for each chord.

Now, when you begin to be more familiar with playing the notes for each chord of the ii-V-I format, practice the piano music accompanied with your play-along CD. Do this until you remember playing it without faltering. When you have mastered this practice technique playing the third and seventh chord, you can then move on to other notes.

Another way to remember your piano chords is to play the notes in varying speeds and accompaniments. This should help you remember the chords and improve your piano skills. You should play around with the notes outside of the chords and discover how it will sound it will create.

These practice tips will be more helpful if you already have previous knowledge about music theory. If you are a beginner and just starting to learn how to be a great piano player, it is best to get proper instruction first before exploring other areas for advanced learners. Getting the right education and lots of practice will make you be a better artist.
