Learn How To Utilize Guitar Scales

There has to be a reason to learn guitar scales. If all you want to do is strum along behind some folk song, then you can skip the scales. But, if you have any desire to really play the guitar then you need scales. You need them for the long term, not just as some sort of rite of passage. Scales rock and they also jazz, swing and samba.

First is wise to remember that scales do not differ between most instruments. If you learn the C Major Scale, then the notes are the same for you as they are for the piano and the flute etc. It is this universality of scales that makes them worth your time. Learn the scales and you will always be able to understand where other musicians are going.

To really get good with scales, to earn your chops so to speak, takes some time. It is generally accepted that short sessions done daily will get farther and faster than spending two hours twice a week. The reasoning behind this concept is that scales are fairly straight forward and you will lose concentration if you spend more than five to fifteen minutes at a sitting.

Five to fifteen minutes every single day could get you to Carnegie Hall. Just like the old saying says. It will also give you enormous flexibility in your playing when you find that you can fluidly locate every note that can be played on the guitar without concern. So realize from the onset this is a long term project. This is something that will pay off in huge rewards if done consistently.

To make sure that scales are part of your daily routine you might try playing a scale every time you pick up your guitar. Play a scale before you play anything else. Play is slowly, which is very hard to do well.

Now and then play a scale while listening to each note for tone quality. You also might try the whole scale for accuracy while concentrating on relaxing. That is also hard to accomplish. But stay involved with whichever one you have chosen. Mindless practice is a waste of your time.

If you have completed the first several suggestions, then it is quite likely that you have run out of time. Do not continue. Stop right where you are and go on to practice whatever piece or etude or song you have on your agenda. Resist the urge to somehow get whatever scale you are working on right. Trust that in 3 years or so, you will have all of them right where you need them.

The goal of every guitar player that takes the time to learn guitar scales is to get better. If you can find a good guitarist that can play anything with anyone, it is quite likely he or she knows every scale, or at least most of them. This is the kind of knowledge that can be used as long as you play. Yes it takes consistent practice, but you do want to be in constant demand, right?
