If you are in a jazz band, you are probably used to performing at private parties and small venues where people make personal requests. Often you can play these songs from memory and add your own flair. Indeed, it is quite unusual for jazz bands to use sheet music! The whole idea of jazz is improvisation. How do the great bands do it? How do they know so many songs and know them well enough to riff with confidence?
The key to performing without sheet music is to practice with sheet music. All of the best bands practice hard, often and with sheet music. There are all kinds of sheet music available for jazz bands. You can get standard music written by pros or maybe you know a musician/writer who can put together some original music for you – or maybe you can do it yourself. If you are looking for a particular piece, you should check both brick and mortar and online music stores. They are sure to have lots to offer.
However, even after you find the professional sheet music you want, you will need to have it arranged for your band, or arrange it yourself if you have those skills. If you have studied music and made it your career, these are skills you probably have, so you will be able to take a piece of standard music and turn it into something exceptional, just for your band. Even if you and all of your band members love to improvise, just remember to use the sheet music first. This will give your band a chance to study the chord changes and try out all the harmonies to make sure that, at all times, at least one instrument is taking up the harmony line.
Once you have all the basics of a piece worked out, it will be a lot easier to improvise effectively. Remember that jazz is generally intended to provide a relaxing, casual atmosphere. It is the perfect background for a romantic evening or an intellectual dinner with friends. For this reason, you will want all of your selections to come off “without a hitch”. You don’t want to distract and disturb your audience. You want to stimulate and inspire them. Again the key to that is practice, practice, practice with your sheet music so that when you perform, it will seem as if you are effortlessly making it up as you go along.
