Here is a nice article about Mary Chapin Carpenter’s top ten songs.

Like many other “country” songwriters, Mary Chapin Carpenter has gotten better the further she’s gotten away from the mainstream of Nashville country. As her career has progressed, her writing seems so much bigger in scope.

My personal MCC favorites (more or less in order of release)
1-Never Had It So Good
2-Quittin’ TIme
3-This Shirt
4-You Win Again
5-Halley Came to Jackson
6-He Thinks He’ll Keep Here
7-Jubilee
8-Let Me Into Your Heart
9-On With the Song
10-Houston

The last two songs from “The Calling” album really showcase the overall scope of her writing now. On With The Song details the current state of censorship and particularly brings in the situation of the Dixie Chicks and their anti-Bush remarks. “Houston” is a tale of the fate of those who were evacuated from New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

I’ll add a bonus song. If you’ve never heard “The Opening Act”, as far as I know she never recorded it, but she did open one of the country awards shows with it and it brought the house down. It’s about the trials and tribulations of being the first musician onto the stage – how neither the crowd nor the headlining act give a crap about you. At the time it was said that Dwight Yoakam was the target of some of the mocking things she wrote about the headliner. After some searching I found it at the attached link
