Suggestions On How To Read Piano Music
If you want to know how to read piano music, an important first step is to know the notes. Also called the scale, they range from A to G, and then start over again. They can be sharp or flat, too. A sharp note means that the key to its right is played instead. A flat note means the key to its left is played. These symbols are all found on the page of the music.
The music is written along a staff. Usually there is a top and a bottom staff, each consisting of five horizontal parallel lines. The top staff is the treble clef and the bottom staff is the bass clef. Each is distinguished by it’s own distinct symbol. The treble is also called the G clef and the bass is called the F clef.
Generally you’ll play the notes on the top with your right hand and the notes on the bottom with your left. The top notes are the melody and the bottom are the harmony. The time signature tells you the song’s rhythm.
Notes are written on both the lines of the staff and in the spaces in between. Where they are on the staff tells you what note it is. If you start from the bottom and move up, beginning with the bass staff, the notes on the lines are G, B, D, F, A, easily remembered by reciting the sentence good boys do fine always. In the spaces starting at the bottom are A, C, E, G, or all cows eat grass.
The treble notes, on the lines from the bottom up, are E, G, B, D, F, and in the spaces F, A, C, E. Remember Every good boy does fine, and the word face. In between the two staffs you’ll find the middle C, and to its left is a B note which rests atop the top line of the bass staff. To its right is a D, which sits just below the bottom line of the treble staff.
The shapes and color of the notes express how long they should be played. They are generally either whole, half, quarter, eighth, or sixteenth notes. A whole note counts for one measure, which is four beats. Half notes are played for two beats, quarter notes for one, and so on. Whole and half notes are white while the others are black. Any note that has a dot means that it should be extended by half of its normal beats. For example, a whole note with a dot would play for six beats.
It’s a good idea to have some sheet music and a keyboard in front of you when you start out. Learning how to read piano music isn’t all that difficult.
