Mouthpiece Cushions
I’m searching for a Trombone mouthpiece on a website as a Christmas present and I don’t know how they fit?

So I have a Jupiter 636R or something like that, it’s a trigger trombone. I have the mouthpiece that came with it when I bought it like 2-3 years ago and the mouth piece says “Jupiter 6(1/2) AL” and when I’m looking on this website at mouthpieces, they have measurements
CUP CHARACTERISTICS: Shallow cup with a fairly wide cushioned rim.
RIM CHARACTERISTICS: Width 6.77mm. Inner diameter – 25.146mm.
THROAT BORE: 6.045mm.
That kind of stuff. And I’m wondering which one pertains to the mouthpiece actually FITTING in the horn. The issue that I don’t want to have is ordering an expensive mouthpiece that doesn’t fit my horn so I’d really love some reassurance on this.

The “fitting in the horn part” is related to the bore of the instrument, and is not going to be included with mouthpiece measurements. Trombone mouthpieces come in two different bore sizes, small bore and large bore. If you have a 636R, that’s a bass trombone and it definitely is large bore. Most tenor trombones that have a valve (with a few exceptions) are large bore as well.

The only concern I have is that 6 1/2 ALs are usually (but not always) small bore mouthpieces so I’m not sure which size you need!

Find out the exact model number for your horn, look it up online to see if it’s large bore or small bore, and take that answer into account when you look for the right mouthpiece.
