Mouthpiece Hard
Does a jazz mouthpiece for an alto sax sound completely different from a hard rubber mouthpiece?
I have been playing the alto sax for about 5 years now. I currently have a rubber mouthpiece. I am a big jazz fan and i want to get better and I want to get that very smooth sound. I also want to learn how to growl. Will a jazz mouthpiece sound a lot different than a hard rubber mouthpiece? If so, will I get the sound that I want? Please answer, I appreciate it.
Michael is right. Your mouthpiece is going to make less of a difference in your sound then practicing. Also there are many hard rubber jazz mouthpieces. It doesn’t have to be metal. But your mouthpiece does make a big difference in sound. If you want a jazz sound then you want a mouthpiece with a small chamber. This gives it a bright edgy tone. Bari makes allot of jazz mouthpieces (metal and hard rubber) and meyer is also known to make good mouthpieces. Go to a local music and try some out. (you never want to get a mouthpiece without trying it). While you’re there get some real books and some jazz reeds too. Michael is also right about the growling. By the way, if you want to learn jazz, you’ll want to start learning some of the theory behind it. Mark Levine has a great book about just that and it will help immensely with improvisation.
