The Merits Of Children Piano Lessons

Children, though they may look fragile and vulnerable, are also very adaptive to new skills and talents taught to them. For this reason, many parents desire their children to learn many different talents while still in their tender years. These parents sign their kids up for ballet, music, art and even martial arts classes. Moreover, aside from acquiring the particular talent children learn in their classes, they also get a bunch of other advantages they can use with other activities. For example, in children piano lesson, children do not just learn how to play the instrument; they even obtain positive characteristics and abilities as well.

The primary, and probably the most important benefit children can get from learning children piano lessons is helping the kids to achieve more in their academic skills. In studies conducted, it was proven that children who know how to play a musical instrument get higher scores on both spatial cognitive and standard tests, and those who play the piano in particular excel in math, mainly on the topics on ratios and fractions.

Furthermore, a study by Dr. Frances Rauscher of University of Wisconsin and Gordon Shaw of University of California found out that preschoolers who were engaged in piano lessons got 34% higher scores in spatial-temporal reasoning exams, compared to their classmates who were not engaged in any musical lessons.

Aside from being better in academic performances, learning the piano also helps kids gain self-esteem. The entire process of learning a difficult piece requires a lot of hard work and determination. Thus, when a child masters a piece and gets to perform it successfully in front of a live audience, the sense of accomplishment is really palpable in them. As a result, he would raise his self-esteem and have a better social performance. Taking piano lessons is even a good way to help kids keep an optimistic outlook in life.

Good eye and hand coordination is another skill that the children get as they practice playing this musical instrument. There is more to that because children who play the piano have increased motor skills since they utilize both hands in playing the instrument. Accumulation of these skills results in the child’s improved body dexterity and complex mind processes.

To add to that, they gain a great deal of concentration as well. They achieve this through music reading and memorizing notes and piano pieces in the course of their practice. Music reading is a good way to teach these kids how to think artistically and decisively.

Another important advantage that children get from learning and playing the piano is that they become well- rounded. They will acquire more knowledge beyond those they learn in school. For example, they get a chance to be exposed to classical music and pianists such as Bach and Mozart. Moreover, they learn to appreciate these things as they go on with their children piano lessons and might even apply their learning in real life.
