Music Tony Martin

Why is American popular culture so obsessed with gangsters?
(the Godfather, Tony Soprano, Goodfellas, Casino, rap music, Tony Montana, John Gotti etc. the list could go on). I am not, by the way criticizing the artistic merits of any of this (I am big fan of the Sopranos, The Godfather, and the Martin Scorsese movies) I am just wondering why the gangster has become such a central figure in American popular culture.
b/c those movies and shows make that certain lifestyle look so attractive…in all reality its a dangerous lifestyle…but hollywood doesn’t show that side. Its like those girls gone wild vids…they show all the nude girls and the “attractive” sex b/t the girls and all the guys but..they don’t show the STDs, hang overs and regrets
