In June 5, 1599 in Seville, Diego Velasquez was born, coming from a family that is just an average class and being the first born of six children. Velasquez’s talent was so noticeable that at the young age of eleven, he commenced his tutelage with another master of the arts at that time whose name was Francisco Pacheco. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with and chose as his wife his master’s daughter and for a while, he made a living by producing paintings with religious themes which he sold to churches; he also made paintings for taverns, and offered his services as a portraitist.
The career of Diego Velasquez as a great artist was made brighter by painting several masterpieces which were unparalleled during his era. When he met Marques de Spinola, Velasquez created a piece named Surrender of Breda which tells the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the piece, he was stricken with awe and amazement and cannot contemplate how amazing was Velasquez’ ability to express and capture emotions through the realism of his portraits. However, Diego will continue to paint and he would produce a piece that would be more famous and more brilliant than the Surrender of Breda, he will be widely known for his piece called Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; The painting is said to be the most viewed piece in the world and until now most people visit Spain just to see this wonderful work of art.
