Am I too Old To Learn Piano?
‘Am I too old to learn the piano? ‘ This is one of the most typical questions that I get asked when writing about beginners piano. It appears that this is a worry for anybody from the age of 14 and above. There seems to be some fallacy or urban myth saying that once you get past a certain age you will not be in a position to effectively learn how to play the piano or keyboards.
Well the good news is that this is not true at all and in some cases it is really the exact opposite of the truth in the sense that the older you are the better you’ll allow yourself to be taught.
When very young children are taught the correct way to play the piano the progress can be very slow and frustrating for them. They need regular scheduled practice sessions and it will be extremely tricky for them to maintain interest. Initially it requires a long time for children to master the piano as compared to adults but over a period the know how of piano playing appears to get integrated into them and once they start to become skillful it becomes very easy for them to advance further.
When the piano is taught to older children in the teens then the progress can be less painful and enthusiasm might even be high. It is a good time to learn the instrument but at this age the teen will find that their enthusiasm wavers and though it is very normal that they may spend a few weeks or months learning with gusto they will likely become distracted by other projects, schoolwork, examinations or members of the opposite sex all contributing to a lack of progress and in numerous cases the giving up of the instrument totally.
In my opinion, the ideal time to be taught how to play the piano or the keyboards is as an adult. When you have your education complete and you have got your established daily schedule you’ll know precisely how much time you have got to dedicate to learning the piano. You’ll be ready to plan your practice much easier and the only incentive you want will be that you’ve got a desire to learn. This is probably the most significant factor and is explicitly linked to success. The adult piano student is a lot less sure to throw in the towel on the goal of becoming skilled if they can see their learning path set out before them and if they can see method in the lessons and know where they are leading to.
It’s also becoming very popular for pensioners to take up piano who have no idea at all about the way to play but have always wanted to learn. This too is a good age to learn. The progress may not be intensely rapid because you want to interiorize the movement of the hands and fingers but at this age there is less hurry to learn. The whole learning process becomes the joy in itself instead of learning so as to achieve perfection.
