Organ Works Book

Why don’t intensive care unit physicians want to be organ donors? What do they know…?
…that they don’t want us to know?
The anthropologist Margaret Lock conducted extensive interviews with 32 physicians, who worked in intensive care units (where most determinations of “brain death” are made). Only six of the 32 had signed their organ donor cards. None of the remainder were able to provide a convincing explanation as to why they had not.

What do they know that they don’t want us to know?
A third-generation atheist
XY – I do not know what you want me to tell you since you included that you are a third generation atheist. I am a I don’t know how many generations Christian so of course, my first GUESS would be that they know there is an afterlife…but that is not the answer you want.
Pragmatically I would say that 6 out of 32 is probably not bad and would need to know what the statistics are in the general population to compare this figure.
If you simply feel there needs to be protocol to establish a true time of death, I would agree with you with the caveat that I do not believe in keeping people alive indefinitely on machines. In addition, many, many transplants come from people who have died by accident and injury. And we KNOW that transplants work and often from one death, many are saved or cured.
What is a convincing excuse…I know what mine used to be…I wanted to but I kept forgetting. Our cards are on our driver’s license, which we renew every six years and all it entails is filling out a test they send you in the mail, along with the answers, going in and taking an eye test and a picture. They do not even give you the license anymore, it is mailed to you within six weeks. I have NEVER been asked if I want to sign my donor’s card when I renew.
There are ethical questions. Are there organ buyers and sellers, yes, we know that. Have people had babies just to provide another family member with an organ or blood, yes, we know that happens and with stem cell possibilities it will happen more.
I am sure that there are religions and denominations out there that believe it’s wrong. As a Christian, neither my personal relationship with God, nor my church doctine would make that statement. God has given us skills and brains to create the technology to make this possible. Again, though that is not your answer.
Though there maybe instances of wrong doing and ethical challenges to face in organ transplant, what we do know is that as human’s, we can save lives by giving up our organs at our death. Ultimately, I cannot argue that position as being morally and/or ethically incorrect.
