Part Mixed Opt

Hawaiian Indigenous People?
Are there still actual indigenous people left in Hawaii, or is everything pretty much mixed now? If there are indigenous Hawaiians left, how do they feel about the unjust co-opting of their lands and culture, and are they doing anything to preserve the old ways? Do they feel part of America, since Hawaii is considered a state?
There are fewer than 10,000 “full Hawaiians” left, although an exact count is hard to come by — both because of the small number, and because of the differing demographic data collection methods used (the U.S. Census stopped counting “full Hawaiians” in the 1960s).
As to how they feel about statehood and the U.S.? The answers vary as widely as the answer to the same question about any politically and spiritually diverse group. It’s fair to say many feel strongly that a sovereign Hawaiian nation should be restored, and that the land should be returned to the indigenous peoples of the islands. But many others have meanwhile embraced newcomers, and are concerned primarily with preserving and perpetuating their customs and languages.
