Parts Marching Band

Should I join HS marching band?
I’m an HS sophomore; I play trombone.
I never considered playing in marching band. Last year, I didn’t play in marching band despite the begging of my band teacher. Every time I heard them at a parade, I would not like the loud noise and the pounding of the drums, and I find football games boring. When given the opportunity to join, I declined repeatedly. Marching band was not for me. Besides I already play in the band and write for my school newspaper.
This year, I wasn’t planning on joining. But a few days ago after hearing the marching band drum roll courtesy of an enthusiastic marching band clarinet member, I have reconsidered, and asked myself ‘should I join marching band’? I don’t know whether
this part of me really wants to join marching band, or if my mind has been convinced by my band director’s incessant speeches throughout the year. Should I join?
As a drummer who was in marching band, I did not enjoy band a whole lot. Drumline was cool… it was just a hell of a lot of work. Practicing five days a week doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for schoolwork or getting a job to make money.
From what I’ve seen, trombone players are typically immature and annoying. My high school’s brass section was exceptional, as the band director seemd to love them (they hung out in his office) and hate the drumline (must have been harassed by one as a child).
As a drummer, I had the best chops of my life in marching band, but it wasn’t worthwhile. If you reallyu want to play that much, do it on your own, don’t bother marching, maybe join a ska or jazz band or something. Oh, I almost forgot: There are a lot of really desperate girls in marching bands, so if that’s your thing, it might be worth the investment to get laid. Then again, a lot of those girls are in the concert band, too…
