Pavane Pour Une
June 30th, 2003

I think this is French, can you help me?
There’s a classical cong I’m listening to which is titled:
“Pavane pour une infante défunte”
Considering the fact that this is by a French composer by the name of Maurice Ravel, I’m pretty sure the title is French. I am fairly certain that “pour une infante défunte” means “for a dead princess”, but I’m not positive on that. If I’m right about the dead princess part, could you tell me what “pavane” means?
Thanks in advance.
I think it means dance or music, but I am not quite sure.
EDIT: It’s the same word in English. The term refers to a “stately dance”, or music for this dance.
