Were Beethoven’s piano works influential?
Like he did with the Eroica, forge the path for romanticism, did his piano sonatas like the pathetique, moonlight, waldstein, appassionata etc. Did they have the same effect in the world of music? Does anyone know any god sources to look at for this as well? Thanks.
In the second movement of the Pathetique Sonata, Beethoven introduces triplets in the C theme.
A first-time listener would expect Beethoven to discontinue the triplets and restate the main theme exactly as it was heard the first time.
Instead, he continues those triplets throughout the restatement.
In the second movement of his piano concerto, Tchaikovsky introduces a figure in his second theme which he continues to use as a countermelody in the restatement of the main theme.
He does the same in the second movement of his Fourth Symphony.
Franck does the same in the second movement of his d minor symphony.
In the first movement of his violin concerto, Mendelssohn begins a passage of unaccompanied arpeggios at the end of the development.
These arpeggios continue while the orchestra announces the recapitulation.
I suspect that this idea is original with Beethoven because I don’t see it anywhere in the Mozart piano sonatas.
Moreover, you may have noticed that Beethoven and Tchaikovsky are both notorious for writing long codas.
If you would like examples from the Beethoven piano sonatas, 22% of the first movement of the Waldstein Sonata is coda, as well as 46% of the last movement.
In the c minor sonata, op. 111, 40% of the second movement is coda.
The last movement of the Moonlight Sonata is 27% coda.
Have you ever noticed that Verdi’s arias start out with a staccato accompaniment,
but sustained chords are added halfway through the melody?
Notice that the second theme has a smoother accompaniment in the g minor sonata op. 49 no.1, first and second movements, the Little Pathetique Sonata op. 10 no. 1, first movement, and the C major op. 2 no. 3, fourth movement.
I’ve never seen Mozart pull this this one either.
