Reeds Classic

What size bari sax reed should I use?
I currently play on a medium hard la voz reed in bari sax. My band director says I need to get louder and he recommended getting a larger sized reed. If this helps, on alto sax I usually play on a size 3 vandoren classic. What size bari sax reed should I play? What brand do you recommend (not made of plastic)? Please only answer if you really know what you are talking about. Thanks!!
What your band director is trying to get you to do is to use more diaphragm support. A harder reed will force you to do so, because it has greater resistance. A harder reed will not be any larger, it is an effect of the size and density of the fibers in the cane.
I harp on it all the time. Maybe too often. But developing a good, daily, challenging tone production routine is what you really need to do.
For starters, play fourth line F. Let go of the octave key, and hold the pitch. One potato note each. Start on said F again, without the 8ve key, and let the pitch “slide” down the octave. All you should need to do is relax the throat. Work at it till you can do it smooth. Then start going from the low register to the upper one. Don’t use the lip or jaw. That would be cheating!
It isn’t gonna help overnight, but in reality neither will going to a harder reed. Changing equipment to solve a an issue with the way you play will at best only mask the problem. Hitting the woodshed hard will solve it.
You might consider switching to a Vandoren 3 anyway, it is probably a more appropriate choice over all for a school band. But it won’t “make” you play louder. But then again I was cranking out as much volume as entire Low Brass SECTIONS on a Vandoren 3 and a C* when I was in HS at 5’8” and 140 soaking wet. It ain’t the horn that screams, it’s the cat behind.
A great source for ideas to develop YOUR tonr production routine.

Velvet Underground & Nico $2.62 When the Velvets recorded this debut, they were best known as the protégés of Andy Warhol (who designed the sleeve), and as a grating, combustive live band. Fueled by drummer Moe Tucker’s no-nonsense wham and John Cale’s howling viola, some of the straight-up rock & roll and arty noise extravaganzas here bear that out. But before Lou Reed was singing about sadomasochism and drug deals and writin… |
