Reeds Jazz
are there these red java reeds now? because i just bought the green pack yesterday.. whats the difference?
plus any one ever tried the back box?
i found i love the java [green] MUCH more than the classic blue.
I play classical and jazz, and have more of a classical set up [c* mouthpeice and a bg gold rovner ligature.]
butwhat are these red ones now?
plus are the black box ones similar to java? are they better to play on?
The red box Java reeds are simply a filed version of the Java reed; a filed cut reed tends to sound a bit brighter than their unfiled counterparts. The shorter the table on the mouthpiece, the more you should tend to use filed reeds; mouthpieces with long tables (e.g., the metal tenor C** I have) are better equipped as a rule with unfiled reeds.
I know of no black box Vandoren product; could you be alluding to Marca? These are very heftily cut filed reeds; if you select these, it’s generally a good idea to drop a reed strength (for example, if you use blue box 3′s, get Marca 2-1/2′s or prepare to file/sand or use other preparation techniques to thin a 3 out over the rails so your embouchure can squeeze it open). I’m presently using among my reed rotation a Marca 3 I found among my reed stock on my Meyer 6 on alto; after sanding the reed as prescribed above, it really sings.
