Rubank Elementary

What books will help me learn to read music most efficiently?

I’ve only looked on Amazon to see what they have, and I saw some books by Allen Vizzutti. I don’t know if those are for building strength/endurance or if they will help with reading also. I can play pretty good by ear, but my reading is bad; especially dotted notes. It’s much easier for me to play a song by ear, but I’d really like to know reading, so that I can compose songs properly. My heroes of trumpet are Miles, Freddie Hubbard, and Lee Morgan, and I know they were good improvisers, but I know they could read and write music in order to lead a group. I also saw some Rubank elementary trumpet books that look really old school. Also CLarke studies or this one

I can usually read the real book stuff but it’s kind of cheating because I know the song in my head already, so I just need to see the notes; I’m not really reading the rhythm.

my suggestion for you is that you can try to write down the music in your head on the staff paper without looking at the music, and in this way, you build up a better idea of how music is written so you can gradually get used to it when reading music.
