The Real Book Sax Combo?
My friends and I are starting a sax quartet/combo for our school and was wondering if The Real Book is a good way to go for songs? We were thinking of doing a T(S)TAB type combo.
contrary to popular belief, the real book is very advanced and difficult to use. the music all looks incredibly easy,but it’s not. it involves intricate chord structures and soloing over it. you are expected to make the song your own, and not simply follow the music. honestly, with a sax quartet, unless you want to put in the work, the real book will sound like crap unless you work with it a ton. all of you playing in unison will just be awkward and horrible, so a lot of work would be put forth. i know this from experience. go for something that has harmonies and puts you all on different parts. try some marching/pep band music or something.
