Choosing The Right Saxophone Course

Music schools offer various saxophone courses. Some saxophone courses focus on specific genre, while others cover saxophone music in general.

Learning saxophone requires coordination and concentration. Basic knowledge of notation is also important. The ideal saxophone course should have all these covered and demonstrated clearly and thoroughly. A good saxophone course will have a complete curriculum which will include finger positioning, playing notes A to F, and the proper ways of blowing.

Finger Positioning

To produce a particular note, saxophonists have to press certain keys.

For most woodwind instruments like saxophone, the first note is usually a B, which is produced by pressing down the left hand’s first finger. Be reminded that the first finger is not necessarily placed on the first key.

You will get an “A” note if you press down your first and second finger. Do not press the small button but make sure that your second finger goes on the larger button at the underside of the instrument.

Press down the first three fingers to generate a G note. To play C, follow the finger positioning for A and remove the first finger from its position.

Playing a D is the most complicated. The octave key must be played withe the first three fingers of the left hand, with the right hand pushing the instrument down. Beginners will understandably experience difficulties producing the note at first try.

Holding the Instrument

The left thumb should be positioned below the octave key. The octave key can easily be found because it is the one that faces you. It controls the pad on the neck of the instrument. Check that you can slide your thumb without too much difficulty to reach the octave key. Position your first three fingers on the A, B and G keys respectively. Keep the right thumb below the thumb rest to support some of the weight of the sax. Then position the first three fingers of the right hand on the E, F and D keys respectively.

Tips on Choosing a Saxophone School

Seek advice and recommendations

Ask around to know which is the best school in your community. Interview some music students to know how well they progressed from the lessons in their school.

Inspect school facilities

Visit your prospective music schools and inspect their facilities. Determine the types and number of saxophones they have per student. Also pay attention to the classroom environment. Does it foster artistic expression, creativity and learning?

Assess the qualifications of music instructors

You must know the credentials of the saxophone faculty of your prospective music schools. It would be good if the teachers are licensed professionals, especially if you are a beginner. Try also to have a conversation with them to get a feel of their attitudes. Are they patient, approachable and passionate toward teaching? Are the teachers specializing in education or do they also work as performer? A teacher who is also an experienced performer can teach you many effective lessons than a teacher who has had no experience performing live in front of an audience. Experienced performers have a lot of things to share about the practical aspect of the music profession.

Special courses

If you want to specialize in specific genre, check the curriculum to see how much units are allocated to it. Are you interested in studying classic music, jazz or modern music? If you are just starting out with learning the sax, make sure that you look for the most comprehensive saxophone course that should make you an expert on the types of saxophone, its music and the techniques in playing it. It is better to choose a saxophone course that gives introduction to some advanced techniques like multiphonics.
