Restoring Your Credit After Bankruptcy
One of the biggest bankruptcy questions is can I restore my credit after the bankruptcy, is it conceivable? Sure it is. You just have to do your do diligence and know how to begin. You need to arrange and follow a family budget. Most importantly you need to learn from your mistakes. Live within or below your means. Know and understand exactly what got you into the financial shape of having to file bankruptcy and make the needed changes. You have already taken the biggest step. You have filed bankruptcy and are starting over. Now you just need to rebuild that credit history.
Unfortunately, bankruptcy can remain on your credit report for up to ten years and that is a huge dent in your credit rating and credit score. So, you are going to want to add positive information to that report to show that you made a mistake and are adopting new habits. Believe it or not one of the best forms of credit restoration after bankruptcy, and a great way to start rebuilding your credit, is a credit card. . With these types of credit cards you will have to provide cash upfront that will be put in a special savings account and you will borrow against that money. Your credit line will be small but you will have monthly payments. You need to make those monthly payments on time and in the full amount. If you have done your homework and found a secured credit card that reports to all three of the major credit bureaus, then this will be a great step towards rebuilding that credit report.
Another idea for credit restoration after bankruptcy might be to get an installment loan such as a student loan, an auto loan, or a mortgage. This will probably require some type of collateral, as well, since you are now considered “high risk”, in terms of being able to pay the money back. Another type of loan to obtain may be a revolving loan such as a credit card or home equity line of credit.
It is not only the type of loan you choose, it is making sure that you follow through on the guidelines in place, when it comes to credit restoration after bankruptcy. Let the bankruptcy be one of lifes learning experiences. Make those monthly payments promptly even early if you can. Don’t use the entire line of credit offered. Only use what you can afford to pay off monthly. Stick to that household budget you have in place.
Always keep track of your credit report. Make sure that all of the information in the report is correct. After all, your credit score is based on that very information. It’s up to you to do the research and make wise knowledgeable decisions in order to restore your credit after your bankruptcy, but it can be done!
