Select Alto

Alto Sax Mouthpiece jazz question?
I just recently purchased a Berg Larsen 100/2/sms stainless steel mpc. I was wondering if the number 2 baffle is comparable to the 1 or 0 baffle. I really want to get a super bright sound on my alto. And what reeds do you guys recommend? I’d used la voz reeds and vandoren javas on my tenor w/ a metal link stm mpc and they’re pretty good. Will they be good for alto? I’m also considering RIco Jazz Selects and I’m currently using plasticover reeds.
I believe that 2 is indeed less bright than 1 or 0. A baffle of zero will help you get closer to the David Sanborn sound. A baffle of 1 is more moderate, and more flexible.
Those reeds will certainly work on alto. Vandoren Javas will certainly help get you that super bright sound. My friend plays on a metal mouthpiece of some sort with Java strength 2 reeds. He can control the intonation and pitch though, and that is no easy feat.
I’ve never used Jazz Selects by Rico but I’ve used the Rico Reserves for classical playing, and while they play like butter (offering just the right amount of resistence and creating a pretty gorgeous tone), I’ve had problems playing in tune on those reeds. However, I’ve never tried the jazz ones so I don’t know what to tell you about those.
I use Vandoren ZZs, strength 3, and I love them. I do tend to prefer a more moderate than bright sound though (like Art Pepper’s or Cannonball’s). You can give them a try though, maybe on a lower strength. I know people who use V16s, too, so those could be worth a try.
I would recommend playing for a while on that mouthpiece before buying a new one. If you really want to try for a brighter sound, try some mouthpieces out if you can before purchasing. Ask a music retailer or a teacher.
And remember, no matter the setup, it is really you playing the music. If you were playing one-on-one with Michael Jordan, and he had on some old, smelly sneakers while you had some fancy $500 tennis shoes, who would win?
Good luck, and never stop playing!

This disc is equally noteworthy for Janet Baker’s magn… |
