looking for a new alto sax set-up?
I’m looking to try some new set-ups and I was wondering what some pro sax players play on…. like cannonball adderley, paul desmond, coltrane, stan getz, richie cole…. help? (i’m trying to get a “jazzie” kinda sound
Some of the most renown jazz artists use Mark VI from Selmer Paris
or Reference 54 Series. But people like Phil Woods use Yamaha YAS 82 (he sounds really good on it). Anyway, to me, I think the one most
important things is what kinds of mouthpiece you have.
Stan Getz uses Metal Otto Link Tonemaster. Sonny Rollins uses
Metal Berg Larsen 130/2 (this is a customized mouthpiece so it requires a special order). Jody Jazz is good too, but I don’t like them.
You said you wanted to get a Jazzy sound right? well, there are many
different kinds of jazzy sounds; soft/mellow, bright and so on…
If you would like to sound bright, then go buy a metal mouthpiece.
However, it doesn’t have to be a metal mouthpiece for you to produce
a bright sound, because rubber mouthpieces like Tone Edge from Otto Link can sound as nice a metal one.
People also say Meyer is really good too. Well they are wrong. They used to be really good when they were “Meyer New York”, but now they don’t sound as good as they did in 20 years ago. So don’t get a meyer unless it says Meyer New york on it.
There are so many people who say they “love” vandoren JAVA, ZZ, or V16 reeds….um okay, personally, Ive tried them all, but I hated them.
(But I would buy ZZ if I had to choose among those three reeds, but those reeds are over rated). Professionals often use regular Vandoren (the blue box), or if you don’t like them, I also recommend you Rico select or rico jazz; they are really good also.
Finally, if you want to perform as a soloist, I would urge you to try
different kinds of metal mouthpieces before you buy one. But again, you “don’t have to have a metal mthpc to become a great soloist; Getz played on hard rubber before.
Oh and NEVER buy a new mouthpiece without trying them first.
