Things to Consider Before Using Sheep Drenches to Cure Diseases in Sheep

Sheep farming has become a thriving business these days. Developments in the medical science have made things a lot easier to promote production and ultimately a healthy business. However, many farmers have to face tremendous losses when their sheep die a sudden death. This usually occurs when the animals succumb to serious ailments caused by liver flukes, roundworms and other such parasitic worms. Animals come in contact with these worms particularly through what they graze on. That is where sheep drenches come into play.

Drenching is the practice of administering medicine to sheep in large doses orally. Drenches have been in use for many years now to control internal parasite infestation in sheep all over the world. However, there are number of things to consider before you start sheep drenching. The most important of these is to carry out a worm test to see the reaction. To your surprise in case of acute infestations some drenches may let you down. This means that the animals may develop resistance to sheep drenches being administered to them over a period of time. This leads to failure in controlling the spread of parasites in animals’ body worsening their health and ultimately impacting production. This usually happen in a dry season.

Another reason leading to the ineffectiveness of sheep drenches is their inappropriate use. This stresses the importance of effective use of drenches to keep animals healthy and free of worms. Effective use of drenches means not overusing them i.e. to use them only when required. When the weather is warm and wet multi-active drenches should be used as worms get most active during these conditions. Long-active drenches are also useful for these conditions. During dry season, single active drenches should be used.

An important key to control internal parasitic infestation is to implement effective drenching techniques. For this, you must carefully read the instructions regarding dosage and the time to administer the medicine on the label of the bottle. It is crucial to take weather and paddock conditions in consideration as these may affect the effectiveness of drenching. Also important is to know beforehand if drenching is need or not.

Sheep drenches that you buy must be appropriate for the type of worms the sheep are infested with. Keeping a check on the symptoms revealed by sheep and egg count in their faeces can help you take a decision. You may as well talk to a veterinarian to use the best suitable sheep drenches.

An effective medicine for lung worms in sheep is Fenzol 5 Litre. For those infested with gastro-intestinal roundworms lung worms and nasal bots Animec Sheep Drench is useful. If your sheep is plagued with immature and mature flukes, you must invest in Flukiver which is one of the most effective medicines to control these flukes. Flukiver can also be administered against immature and adult stages of Haemonchus contortus. It is safe to be administered to sheep of any age and even to pregnant sheep.
