Learning The Piano Does Not Have To Be Hard
Learning the piano can be easy. Now of course if an individual wants to read music the traditional way it can be time consuming. This is not the only way to learn to play.
To play from sheet music, books and classical music professional instruction is required. Instruction books will need to be bought and an hour a day of practice will take a person far. The amount of time and dedication depicts how much time it will take to become proficient.
Theory instruction is mandatory to play classical music or other music by notation. Reading notes, dynamics, timing, and musical terminology is required. This is the only way people can play a musical piece exactly the way it is written. This will also allow the player to perform with other classically trained musicians.
However, if people just want to play popular music, classical instruction is not really mandatory. The musical scale consists of only twelve notes that make up what is called the chromatic scale. When looking at the instrument, the chromatic scale uses both all of the white and black keys. Each note in succession is considered a half step. If a key is skipped it is considered a whole step.
The major scale consists of seven notes plus one more called the octave making eight total notes. An example of this is the C scale. C on the piano is the white key just to the left of the two black keys. Middle C is located just to the left of the decal that displays the name of the piano.
Music uses part of the alphabet to name the notes of a major scale. It starts on A and ends on G, and then it begins again with A. The major scale in C, begins on C then increments to D, E, F, G, A, B and ends on the octave C. The word octave came from octal meaning the eighth tone.
The key of C only uses white keys. If the scale is counted, using only white keys they will notice that there are two places where no black key separates the white keys. Therefore the spaces between these notes are half steps. When a person counts the notes of the scale, the half steps are between the third and fourth notes and the seventh and eighth tones. This is a pattern that works in any key. A person can start on any other note and making sure to make all intervals are whole steps except the above exceptions. By using this number method a person could play a major scale in any key using the black notes along with the white.
So learning the piano does not necessarily require formal training, if a person doesn’t want to play classical music or play by reading notes. Some people can hear a song and play it without any musical knowledge others need notes to read. If a person does well on his or her own learning from a book, no instruction is really needed.
