How to become Fantine (Les Miserables)?
I’m 15 going on 16, and over the summer I’m going to be in a teen production of Les Miserables. My dream role is Fantine, but I’m not quite sure how to ensure that I have a shot at the role. I’m an alto with a fair belt, and I’ve been working on “I Dreamed a Dream” for the past few months. The problem is, working with the sheet music and piano feels wrong to me, because I just acquired the sheet music and had be practicing from Youtube karaokes, recordings, etc. before. Any advice as to overcome that problem would be great (especially if you are familiar with the sheet music and at least Patti Lupone’s recording of the song). If you could help me, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
It’s great that you are already practicing! That will help you more than anything.
If you don’t already have a voice teacher, you should get one at least until the audition. They will help you and make you more comfortable singing with the sheet music.
The difference between singing with the sheet music and to a recording/ karaoke track is that you have to lead the piano, instead of the other way around. If you are singing to prerecorded accompaniment, you have no freedom to sing how you want. You can’t change rhythms at all, and you don’t have another voice track to help you when you get off of the rhythm. You really need to practice without a recording so you can make the song your own. You don’t just want to mimic Patti Lupone. She is amazing, and you can take some of the things she does into your own performance, but directors don’t want to see an imitation of a famous performance. Also, without a recorded track you are forced to actually internalize the rhythm instead of just following the melody on the recording. Try and find someone to play the piano for you while you sing, so you can get used to it.
