Uncommon Warmth In A Common Yard
It’s a cool summer night. the yard is filled with loved-ones. Everyone is having a GREAT TIME stargazing, and listening to peepers and crickets. Dear friends, even dearer family – does it get any better than this?
There are few things that bring friends and family close together like a fire pit does. The enchantment of the flickering flames, the light and warmth cast by the fire, the fun of toasting marshmallows and making s’mores would make this a truly memorable occasion. There are just a few guidelines one should know before utilizing such an apparatus.
First of all, fire pits can be home made or purchased at a store. When purchasing a fire pit that’s partially assembled, a comprehensive owners’s manual should be included, and the remaining assembly should be easy to complete. When creating your very own fire pit, you’ll want to check with your local library or a store that deals in fire pits for detailed do-it-yourself instruction booklets on how to properly build one. To start, dig down a foot or greater, and expand the diameter of your hole as big around as you wish your fire to be. Next, gravel, rocks, brick, or concrete (blocks or poured slab) can be is used to fill the hole about half. Then, put in place a metal lining (a cutout 55 gallon barrel works well, or you can get an adequate metal strip from most hardware stores). Next, you’ll want to pile rocks, brick, or concrete blocks around the metal liner, securing each with masonry glue. Top the wall off with copestone, give the fire pit a couple of days to settle and dry, then it’s ready to use and you can lay wood or coals for a fire.
Safety precautions should always be used when operating anything involving an open flame. Instill in your kids the dangers of fire, and NEVER leave them unsupervised! Remove ALL flammable materials from the immediate area. The kids will enjoy spending evenings around the fire, toasting marshmallows and scaring each other with ghost stories. Teach them that, with proper preparation and safety precautions, huddling around the campfire can be a very SAFE and ENJOYABLE experience!
A fire in the fireplace has been a tradition in this country for centuries. Contrary to what some may believe, there actually WAS life before oil and propane furnaces! It was simply commonplace for our earliest ancestors, families settling in the “New Land,” to congregate with one another EVERY NIGHT after dinner around the fire. Even today, this AMAZING phenomenon continues, and YOU can share in the JOY of the warm, cozy fire with your very own fire pit!
