Understanding Suzuki Violin Method

Some people might be baffled when they read it at first, but the Suzuki method has nothing to do with the famed automobile brand. It is an exceptional method used by many music schools to teach students to play musical instruments and is more popular with the violin. The idea was adopted and developed by Japanese Doctor Sinichi Suzuki about mid-20th century. The Suzuki method is now a preferred method of learning many different musical instruments in various music schools around the world.

This concept aims to teach children to play musical instruments even as young as 3 years old. These kids are given small-scale stringed-instruments that fit them well. The essence of Suzuki’s idea of teaching music comes from the “mother tongue” principle, in which babies learn a native language by listening to adults around them, and eventually imitating what they hear.

In learning to play the violin the Suzuki way, a student is made to listen to a musical recording and further mimic what he/she has heard. The student ought to listen repeatedly to a particular recording every day and during suzuki violin lessons. This exercise will familiarize the kid to the music and eventually learn to play the piece correctly.

The interaction between student and teacher is not the only thing being cultivated here but also the parent’s right to participate in their child’s learning. Unlike in other methods, the parent, in Suzuki method, is needed to supervise the child’s daily training. It is not necessary that the parent knows how to play the instrument as well, he/she just needs to be familiar and knowledgeable about the kid’s suzuki violin lessons to determine if the child is doing the right thing.

Competition is not promoted among the students, while collaboration and team-playing are given more focus. In addition to playing solo, the student is likewise, given the opportunity to play with a group and with an audience. This is a great help to the child in making him or her play in a more relaxed and natural manner.

You might be thinking twice in enrolling your child in a suzuki violin school that utilizes this method due to the oddity of the concept. It is by far very different from the technique of teaching the student to play the instrument by following notes that are read from a music sheet. However, teachers and advocates of the Suzuki violin method argue that learning music by ear actually props up the ability of the student in recognizing notes, and in the long run, helps the student expand knowledge in rhythm and tone identification.

You can also be assured with the music instructors of Suzuki schools. To enhance the quality of teaching level, incoming and practicing teachers are required to go through strict aptitude exams and exercises. A formal degree in music is not really required of instructors. They just have to be very good at playing the instrument and have an extensive experience with the Suzuki method.

Due to its exceptional principles and practices, the Suzuki violin method which originally started from Japan, has now been widely adopted all over the US as well as different corners of the world.
