How To Select A Cello Music School

To some people’s mind, the cello is just a violin made bigger, and its not even that popular. But these two have more distinct characteristics. For one, a cello has notes which are a couple of octaves lower than that of the violin. A cello also has to stand between your knees to play.

If you are really interested with this huge stringed instrument and decide to try your hands with its bow and chords, you might be wondering what kind of school or class you should get into to master the instrument. There are two kinds of cello lessons you can choose from: the traditional cello music school and Suzuki school.

In the traditional method, the student gets to learn about music reading, chord playing and proper bow handling all at once. The students very seldom get exposed to recordings of musical pieces early in the learning process. Rather, he is given overly simplified classical pieces that are deemed appropriate for beginner students. This kind of method would surely fit older people

The Suzuki method, on the other hand, is suitable for very young students. Introduced by a Japanese violinist in the 20th century, the method applies the mother tongue philosophy wherein a child adapts to the language he gets to hear regularly. In Suzuki method, the students are made to listen to several music pieces for a certain period of time and eventually try to copy these tunes. Listening and participating are given more importance in this method, rather than learning to read notes.

When you have made the decision about what method suits you, then it is time to think about what set up you want for your cello class. There are three options for you: a group class, a solo session, or online classes.

Group interaction is encouraged in a class situation where students of cello come together to learn under the guidance of a teacher. This way, you can exchange ideas about cello and make new friends too! Many people have problems with this, however, especially those with concentration difficulties.

If you don’t want to be in a group, then it is advisable to have a solo session and find a personal teacher. This way, your teacher can give you more attention, and at the same time you won’t feel intimidated by other students. With a personal teacher, you also have added flexibility in choosing a schedule that is convenient for both you and the teacher. You can also opt to go to the teacher’s studio or have him/her come to your house.

The last option you have is learning through online courses. There are some websites that provide materials like musical pieces, instructions, or even videos for cello students. This method of learning can be convenient for some people, but not for those who feel that they need to ask the instructors questions face to face.

Factors like the location and reputation should also be considered in choosing a cello school. You can also conduct some research to find out which of them offer what you need. As long as you know what you’re looking for, it will be easy to choose the right cello music school for you.
