3 Tips on How to Play the Violin Online

As you learn how to play the violin online there are a few things that you must ensure you do. Failure to follow these will certainly hamper your progress and years of my own study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and working as a teacher have only backed up these top tips.

The violin can be a challenging instrument but it is perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences that you can go through, regardless of your age or ability. So when looking at online violin lessons these are my top 3 tips. In fact these are very similar for other instruments online or offline.

  1. Ensure that you have a good instrument. As a beginner you do not have to have an expensive one. But do not go for the cheapest model either. A poor instrument will only create a poor sound and if it does not excite you to play and listen to it, then your practice and progress will suffer instantly. My advice is to go to a specialist violin shop where they can advise you on a good starter model from a popular maker like Suzuki.
  2. Find the right teacher and the right program. It is important that you ‘gel’ with your teacher. If there is a clash of personalities or teaching styles, this can cause some major problems. I always recommend that when online, look for a program that is popular and taught by a famous performer teacher or both. This way you know you are getting good quality guidance. What a novelty too, to be taught by a modern day Paganini!
  3. Do not jump ahead with your online lessons. Many people once they have downloaded their video lessons, books and backing tracks etc get carried away. It is common to find people grasping the basics but then literally jumping ahead and skipping important lessons. This can cause you to miss valuable information that is crucial to your musical and technical development. Try not to fall into this trap and take the lessons in order.

Learning how to play the violin online is extremely good fun and incredible value. Many of the best programs that last up to 12 months cost the same as just one person to person lesson.
